ESTHWAITE WATER TROUT FISHERY REPORT 21/3/14
TROUT FISHING
The first couple of weeks of the trout season has produced some absolutely stunning fish. All methods have produced and catches have been good from both the boats and the bank!
First up is Stuart Law from Wigan. He fished from the car park banking with legered worm and took his limit of trout in the space of 3 hours. Also fishing legered worm Tom Robertson from Manchester landed 3 brownies, the best fish tipping the scales at 5lb+ from the boathouse banking on the Eastern shore.
Manchester based angler and Hawkshead Angling Club member Andrew Hoyle fished a small mepps spinner, on an ultra light weight set up from his kayak and landed an absolute stonking grown on over wintered fish of 9lb 9oz (see attached photo).
Mike Davis from Lytham landed and safely released a large Brown Trout of 5lb+ while on a guided Pike session. Mike landed the brute which took a bluey deadbait intended for Pike from the boats in the car park area of the lake!
The first heat of the Esthwaite 2014 Pairs competition was won by Ernie Craster and Peter Crowe with a cracking Brown Trout of 7lb 8oz, which was taken on an intermediate line and Cats Whisker combo’. Reigning Esthwaite pairs champions Bob Swann and Colin O’Brien finished the competition in second place and both pairs now qualify for the final in September. If anyone would like to fish any of the 5 remaining heats, please contact the Dave or Alex at the fishery on 015394 36541.
Expect sport over the next few weeks to be exceptional. If its anything like it was last year then there will be a few happy anglers landing potential personal best Brown Trout, even a few double figure specimens are on the cards!
PIKE FISHING
Once again there has been a good few Pike reported recently! First up John Mcgreggor from Peebles landed 2 doubles from the banking on static deadbait. John took a 12 and a 15 pounder in quick succession to round off a memorable day.
Meanwhile Martin Shaw from West Lothian landed a 12 a 13 and a 17 pounder from the car park banking. Hawkshead Angling club member John Bradley  fished from the boats and landed a 9, a 13 and a 17 pounder on static deads’. Also Dave Roscoe from Bury landed a 14 pounder on similar tactics.
Bob Fitzpatrick from Warrington only had 1 run during his day bank session and that was a 20 pounder which fell to a freelined Sprat. Also Stuart Walsh from Manchester employed one of the Esthwaite guides and landed a personal best of 19lb+ from the boats. This one took a legered herring.
Having an exceptional winter campaign H.A.C member Fonz Howard from Preston fished from the shore and landed a 19lb 6oz and a 17lb 12oz  Pike. Both fish fell to herring tails presented in the margins (see attached photo).
With just over another week to go of Esthwaite’s winter Pike season its now or never for all you specimen Pike hunters. The fishing can be testing in March as the heavily gravid big females prepare to spawn, but there’s never a better time of year to land a PB and who knows a 30 pounder could have your name written on it, so come and get it, you have got to be in it to win it, so they say!!
Best Regards
