ESTHWAITE WATER REPORT 1/12/10
TROUT FISHING
At the time of writing the lake only has a partial covering of ice and is fishable, no problem. However as this cold snap kicks in please telephone the ticket office for an up to date report on conditions, before making your journey!
Despite the arctic weather the trout fishing has been pretty good, providing the right tactics are adopted. Indeed Hawkshead Angling Club members Jeff Gregory and fellow H.A.C member Jamie Timmins from Barrow in Furness fished legered worm, hard on the bottom to record 19 rainbows between them. Best fish tipping the scales at over 2lb 8oz and all fish taken from the banking next to the ticket office.
Fishing floating fry patterns on a fast sink line from the boats, John Pratley from Leeds also took a cracking 4 fish limit of rainbows to 3lb+. When fishing such cold conditions, make sure you are anchored with the boat and that your leader is relatively short, as you need to be fishing just off bottom, then simply just employ an erratic slow figure of eight retrieve.

PIKE FISHING
The predators have been more obliging with some cracking fish reported. Big s club member John Ashirst taking a 17lb pike from the boats. John employed float trolled deadbait to tempt his snapper. Also season ticket angler Dave ‘Doggy’ Roscoe fished static herring deadbait from the boats to take another fine double of 15lb.
Again fishing static deadbait from the boats, venue regular Peter Mountain took a nice brace of pike in the form of a 22 pounder and 12 pound respectively.
Meanwhile Mark Billington from nearby Sedbergh employed the guiding services of Esthwaite Water Trout Fishery to tempt a mint looking 22lb pike. The fish fell to a static deadbait, a method which is starting to come into its own during this cold weather.[ See attached picture ].
Providing the cold weather does not carry on as long as last winters spell, then prospects are looking good for the forthcoming weeks as these glacial Lake District lakes have a track record for  fishing well from December through until the end of March!
Also for those that have not read the Bob Church article in the November issue of Coarse Angling Today, I recommend you obtain a copy to whet your appetite for the predator fishing on Esthwaite Water. If you can’t find it in the shops, contact the editor on 01227 762283, to obtain a back issue!
Also for all you coarse anglers out there, Esthwaite’s silver fish ticket is now available for the cost of £7.50. Two rods and the use of maggots are permitted, however any trout caught must be returned immediately.
