ESTHWAITE WATER TROUT FISHERY REPORT – 20/7/11

Cooler, wet weather has improved the fishing no end. The lake is clearing well now and fish are up in the water once more. Early mornings and late evening time has seen the fish feeding hard at the surface, where hatches of olive buzzer’s, sedges and damsels have been extensive. However during the day, be prepared to fish deep again, especially if the sun comes out. Pulling tactics will score heavily on fast sinking lines, in conjunction will flies such as cats whisker’s, blobs and boobies! Finding the depth is critical when targeting the daphnia feeders!

One angler who has been very successful fishing early mornings is John Gardner from Morecambe. Over 3 visits John has fished from the boats in the North basin and taken 14 rainbows and browns to 3lb+. John fished from the boats and took all his fish on an intermediate line and gold head lime green lure. John also took a few fish deep on worm, when the fish disappeared from the surface! Good angling!

Jim ‘Dusty’ Miller is also getting into the fish taking 12 rainbows and browns, again to 3lb+, over 2 visits. Jim also took all his fish from the boats and on similar tactics to John. However all Jim’s fish were taken in the top 6 feet of water.

Visiting angler James Day from Northamptonshire, fished around the weather buoy in the North basin and took 4 rainbow’s to 4lb+ from the boats. James employed a Di-5 line and cats whisker combination!

Also visiting from Italy Federico Buccelli and Giampaolo Grimaldi took 5 rainbows between them. All the fish were taken on worm and all in the 2-3lb range, fishing 20 feet down from the boats.

Best bank fishing is off the point opposite the ticket office or the boat house stretch on the eastern bank. Indeed Stuart Law from Bala in North Wales fished sliding float and worm off the opposite point and took 7 rainbow’s and 1 brownie. The best rainbow tipped the scales at 5lb 2oz!

The children are starting to break up from school and have been fishing with their usual enthusiasm. There has been some very nice fish taken too! James Hyde and Jamie wood from Doncaster, fished around the cages area and deep water fishing 15 – 20 feet down with worm to take these 3 crackers [ see attached photo ].

Also Matthew Whitehead, 8 years old from Carlisle fished similar tactics to  take this cracking rainbow. [ see attached photo ].

However star of the  show was 3 ¾ year old Joe Tansey, who took his first ever trout, while fishing with his dad. The fish was again on worm from the boats. Look at his face – hooked for life! [ see attached photo ]

Heat 6 of the Masterline Walker and Pure Fishing sponsored Esthwaite Water Open Pairs competition was contested last week. Four pairs fished the heat and two qualified for the final to be held on Sunday 25^th September. In second place Bob Swann and Colin O’brien weighed in 3 rainbows for 6lb 10oz. In first place the reigning pairs champions from 2010, Peter Crowe and Ernie Craster weighed in 5 rainbows for 11lb 15oz. Well done to both pairs. Peter and Ernie certainly had it cracked that day, marking off 20 feet of line and fishing deep with cats whiskers. They took 5 solid fish to earn their place, once again in the grand final!

ESTHWAITE WATER TROUT FISHERY REPORT – 8/7/11

The water clarity is gradually clearing and sport is improving no end, however the fish remain deep, very deep and are still feeding on the daphnia blooms. The fly anglers are finding it tricky, with Di-7’s and Di-8’s fished in conjunction with lures such as cats whiskers and blobs from the boats, that are encountering the best sport. Early starters and late finishers are encountering some brief windows of surface action as fish come up for hatches of buzzer and sedges. Worm fished 20-25 feet down though is by far the most productive method at present, with some superb sport reported, especially from the boat fisherman.

Indeed Gavin and Neil Tomaselli from the North East took 4 cracking rainbows to 3lb on deep fished worm from the boats [ see attached photo ].

Also fishing the same method season ticket angler John Gardner from Morecambe took 8 rainbows to 4lb+ , again from the boats.

Sam Towers from Windermere experienced a hectic session, catching 9 rainbows to worm fished at 25 feet depth from the boats.

Also fishing the same deadly method, from the boats, season ticket holder Richard Maddox took 6 rainbows to 3lb 8oz.

Meanwhile Jonathon Higgins from Stourbridge fished boobies on a fast sink line from the boats to take 3 rainbows to 4lb+ and a 2lb brownie.

The last heat qualifier of the open pairs is to be fished on Saturday 9^th July. Anyone wishing to fish the heat should contact the fishery to book a place. The entry fee is £35 per angler and the sponsors Masterline Walker and Shakespeare are giving away a Rovex reel case worth £19.99 to each contestant, so don’t miss out !

The last discounted tuition day also takes place this weekend Sunday 10^th July , however it is fully booked. However if there are  any groups of 6 anglers that want  to participate in an additional tuition session, please contact the fishery and a separate day can be arranged.

Hawkshead Angling Club still have a few places left for the 2011 season . The club which is affiliated to Esthwaite Water Trout Fishery charges £135 for adults and £31 for juniors. ESTHWAITE WATER TROUT FISHERY REPORT – 21/6/11

An algal bloom has provided some tough conditions lately, especially for the fly anglers. Worm fishing is by far the best method at present and spinning tactics are also producing the fish. The fish have been gorging themselves on daphnia and have been tricky to locate. Fishing deep with cats whiskers and blobs have been the most productive method, however some days, intermediates and slow sinkers have been finding the fish. Best areas at present include the weather buoy and grubhole in the North basin. Meanwhile Strickland bay and the cages fishing best in the South basin, especially in front of the ticket office! Top of the water fishing has been restricted to either end of the day. Hatches of buzzer and sedges have been good, but you really need to be out very early or late to experience any sort of surface feeding.

Season ticket holder Richard Maddox has taken 14 fish in 3 visits from the boats. Richard took a combination of Rainbow’s and Brown’s to 4lb+ on cats whiskers and sinking line tactics. [ see attached picture ]

Also season rod John Gardner took 2 Brown’s and a Rainbow on cats whiskers and montana’s from the boats! Meanwhile Bill Hethrington took 3 fish to 3lb + on the fly from the weather buoy.

Worm anglers are experiencing the best sport at present with Greg Parkinson from Manchester taking 7 cracking fish to 4lb+ . Greg and his party of lads took all there fish from the boats on float fished worm!

Visiting anglers John Ellwood and Andy Franklin from Blackpool fished from the boats and took 4 rainbow’s to 4lb 2oz, again on the worm!

Star of the show this week however was young Lois Richardson , aged 5 from Dalton who took his first fish ever in the form of a 3lb rainbow from the ticket office banking on float fished worm. The youngster was over the moon and has persuaded his granddad to bring him again this weekend. Well done Lois, a cracker for your first fish! [ see attached picture ].

Heat 5 of the Masterline Walker and Pure Fishing sponsored Open Pairs competition was contested last weekend. In second place Peter Moore and Paul Wyatt weighed in 1 rainbow for 2lb and in first place John Henshall and Mike Laycock weighed in 1 rainbow for 2lb 6oz. Both pairs now go through to the final to be held on the 25^th September. Heat 6 will be held on Saturday 9^th July, anyone wishing to fish the last heat should contact the ticket office on 015394 36541. Full details will be sent out with entry forms!

There are places left on the discounted tuition day on Sunday 10^th July. Anyone interested should contact the ticket office to book your place. The price is £10 for each participant.

There are still a couple of places left in Hawkshead Angling Club, which now has NO geographical boundaries. ESTHWAITE WATER TROUT FISHERY REPORT – 7/6/11

What a mixed bag of  weather we have experienced over the last couple of weeks. Ten degree air temperatures on many days and chilly winds and then a miniature heat wave at the back end of last week with temperatures pushing 28 degrees for a day or  two. The unsettled weather  has had its effects  on the fishing with catches being up and down, with some quiet days and then some very productive days indeed! Hatches have been inhibited by the cooler weather, however when the  mild/ warm conditions prevailed good hatches of buzzer’s, olives, damsels and alders have been coming off in numbers. Also terrestrials such as daddies, hawthorns and beetles have been numerous. The coarse fish fry are shoaling now in numbers, adding to the veritable larder that the trout have at this time of year.

Best recent catches, include season ticket angler Richard Maddox who took 12 rainbow’s and 2 brownies to 4lb+. All Richard’s fish fell to an orange fritz goldhead fished from the boats. Also Jim Miller took 45 fish in 3 visits including  brown’s and rainbow’s to 4lb+. Again all Jim.s fish were taken from the boats with a Di-3 line and cats whisker, blob and diawl bach combinations!

Raymond Fisher took 6 fish , again from the boats on a sinking line and lure combo. Meanwhile England Youth squad member John Macintosh took a brace of rainbows to 3lb 12oz [ see attached picture ], fishing Di-7 and a booby. Eric Brown from Cockermouth also took a cracking ‘bow of 3lb 8oz!

Worm and spin anglers have also been catching some cracking fish with Dr Fayyaz Musa from Huddersfield fishing a  worm from the boats to record 4 rainbows, biggest a 4lb 10oz beauty [ see attached photo ].

Half term saw the  kids back at Esthwaite Water. Making the most of their holidays and having a whale of  a time with some super catches reported. James Liu [13], Joe Kay [13], Lottie Basterble [8], and Lilly Basterble [9], from Surrey, all caught fish with the supervision of the  fisheries staff, from the ticket office banking and all using worms for bait! [ see attached photo ].

Last weekend saw heat 4 of the 2011 Masterline Walker and Pure Fishing sponsored Open Pairs competition take place and 14 anglers weighed in 13 rainbows for a total weight of 31lb 12oz. In second place Ben Bayliss and Adam Larbaleistier weighed in 2 rainbows for 6lb 14oz. In first place Jon Turner and Brian Shields weighed in 5 rainbow’s for a total weight of 11lb 9oz. Both pairs now qualify for the final in  September and both pairs represent the fishery at national level as part of Peregrine team Esthwaite. Well done lads, good luck for the final! ESTHWAITE WATER TROUT FISHERY REPORT – 18/5/11

The recent fishing on Esthwaite has been a bit tricky over the last few days with cold air temperatures and heavy rain putting the fish down, however before the unsettled weather arrived the fishing, especially top of the water fishing was out of this world. We have experienced excellent hatches of buzzers, olives, damsels, sedges and alders. With falls of daddies and hawthorns thrown in to the equation, providing a myriad of fly life and the conundrum as to which fly to choose. When conditions have been right the top of the water and dry fly fishing have been absolutely fantastic.

Two anglers that really had a day to remember on the dries were Mike Laycock and Bob Swann who fished from the boats and took 30+ fish to 4lb + on a variety of methods, however the bulk of their  haul were taken on dries such as daddies, hoppers, cdc’s and buzzers. [ see attached picture of Mike Laycock with an over wintered fish of 4lb 1oz ].

Ernie Craster and Kevin Henderson from Stockton also had a great day from the boats landing 15 fish to 3lb+ on floating and intermediate lines and blob combinations.

Venue regular and season ticket  holder Jim Miller took 34 brown’s and rainbows to 3lb+ in two visits,on cats hisker, diawl bachs and damsels. All Jim’s fish were taken from the boats! Also another season ticket angler that has been getting in on the action was Bill Mckenna who also boat fished and had 10 fish to 2lb+. Bill’s fish were all taken on a variety of lures from the boats.

Hawkshead Angling Club member Sean Whitaker fished for 4 days from the boats to take 31 fish on a variety of flies, including cats whiskers, hares ears and diawl bachs.

Meanwhile Peter Lang took 10 browns and rainbows to 3lb+ on worm and spinning tactics from the banking opposite the ticket office!

The 2011 Esthwaite Water Tackle Shop Challenge took place last week and the competition was won by Dave Hunt and Scott Graham from Northwest Angling Centre who weighed in a brace of rainbows for 3lb 8oz. Well done lads!

Also heat 3 of the Esthwaite Water 2011 Open Pairs competition was won by Jim Tuck and Graeme Bell who weighed in under tough conditions, two rainbows for 3lb 9oz. Also qualifying for the final in September were John Henderson and Tom Nelson weighing in 1 rainbow for 1lb 50z. Well done to both of these pairs who prevailed on the day and despite the hard fishing conditions.

We still have places left on our discounted tuition days. The June 4^th day is now fully booked, however we still have places left for the 12^th June, 25^th June and the 19^th July. Please ring 015394 36541 for further details.

ESTHWAITE WATER TROUT FISHERY REPORT – 3/5/11

The fishing over the Easter period here at Esthwaite has been fantastic, the lake has really burst into life now. Water clarity is excellent, despite the good run of sunny weather experienced over the last couple of weeks. Even though we had bright weather the fish remained up in the water and given the right conditions buzzer , olive and alder hatches have been extensive. Hawthorn flies have also been common place also, but the best  top of the water fishing has been experienced at either end of the day, when light levels have been lower. During the day, best tactics have been to use floating, intermediate or slow sink lines, in conjunction with nymphs and buzzers. Damsels, hares ears, diawl bachs and crunchers have all featured well on the catch returns! With lures such as cats whisker, sparklers and boobies also doing well on the sinking line tactics.

Esthwaite Peregrine member Jon Turner had a cracking day from the boats, landing 14 browns and rainbows, with the majority of fish falling to black booby and olive cormorants! Meanwhile Alan Hutchinson and David Wilding from North Wales also experienced great sport, taking13 fish between them to 3lb 8oz from the boats on sinking  line and straggler cats. Ron Thompson from Bristol also had a day to remember on the boats, taking  15 fish on diawl  bachs and  damsel nymphs, fished in  conjunction with  an intermediate line!

Season ticket anglers have also been latching into  good numbers of fish with Jim Miller from Keswick taking 5 fish from the  boats and John Gardner and Richard Maddox taking 33 fish over 3 days on a range of flies including buzzers, gold  head nymphs and cats whisker lures fished from the boats. Richard took the best rainbow in the form of a  cracking over wintered specimen of 4lb+.  John however took the best brownie estimated to be in the 4-5lb bracket. Johns fish was released to fight another day!

Any method anglers have also been experiencing fantastic sport, indeed H.A.C member Shaun Hunter fished from the boats to record a 20 fish haul on float fished worm!

The area just outside the ticket office has also been providing excellent sport for the kids over the Easter break. 9 year old Chloe Jacks and 6 year old Mia Jacks took 7 trout between them on legered worm. Meanwhile 16 year old Josh Allis from Melton Mowbary took a fine Brown Trout off the boat jetty  on worm [ see attached picture ].

Hawkshead Anglers are still recruiting for the 2011 season. Telephone Emma Macintosh on 015394 36116, however be sure to be quick as membership for the club is restricted to 100 adult members. Remember there is now NO geographical boundary for the eligibility for the club, so now you don’t have to be a local!

ESTHWAITE WATER TROUT FISHERY REPORT – 13/4/11

Spring is now officially here. The weather has been mixed, but generally mild and the lake is fishing extremely well to all methods and from both the boats and the banking.

Buzzer hatches have been plentiful as have olives and sedges. Alders are also starting to hatch in number.The best of the imitative fishing has been at either end of the  day. However there are some days were conditions have been perfect with fish rising freely all day! Indeed someone who enjoys the imitative approach is Ian Jones from Swarthmoor. Ian fished the north basin around the Hostel Beck and Grubhole area from the boats and took 5 rainbows to 3lb+, all on Ptn’s and buzzer patterns.

Also fishing fly Will Horne from Scotland took 5 rainbows to 3lb 8oz again from the boats. Will’s fish were taken on Yellow Dancer’s and Hare’s Ear’s.

Meanwhile venue regular Jim Miller from Keswick landed 9 rainbows to 3lb+ from the boats on damsel and cruncher nymph combinations.

Season ticket angler John Johnstone had a week to remember. John fished various fly patterns, including lures and nymphs to take 52 fish in 8 days fishing from the boats. Most of John’s fish were rainbows, to 3lb 2oz, however 16 fish were browns to 2lb 8oz.[see attached picture of one of Johns rainbows].

Bank anglers have also been experiencing superb sport with H.A.C members Geoff Gregory and Jamie Timmins from Barrow in Furness taking 20 fish to 2lb 8oz from the car park area of the lake.

Also fishing from the car park James Nicholson from Cleator Moor took 2 rainbows and then had an experience he will never forget when he hooked into a whopping 27lb pike, taken accidently on worm and sweetcorn combo’. Full credit to James for actually managing to get the leviathan in on 6lb line!

On the competition front reigning pairs champ’ Peter Crowe won the Esthwaite Water Troutmasters fish off weighing in 6 rainbows for a total weight of  12lb 9oz. Peter now goes onto to represent the fishery at the grand final, held at Grafham Water next month. Good luck Peter, I am sure you will do us proud!

Last weekend heat 2 of the Esthwaite Water 2011 Open Pairs Competition took place, with 12 anglers weighing in 15 rainbows for a total weight of 27lb 8oz. On a bright sunny day conditions were tough and this reflected in the situation at the weigh in. In second place Blythe Palmer and Richard Landsbury weighed in 4 fish for 6lb 10oz and in first place were the worthy winners and the engine of the England Youth squad, duo John Macintosh and James Atkinson who weighed in 5 rainbows for 8lb 8oz. Both pairs now go through to the final in September [see attached picture]. The next heat of the open pairs will be on Saturday 14^th May. Please telephone the ticket office on 015394 36541 to reserve a place.Each contestant receives a Rovex reel case worth £19.99.
